Unconventional Medium As An Alternative in Printing Process of Contemporary Printmaking

Abstract



Paper is a convensional medium in printmaking that has its own uniqueness and affect. Moreover if the printmaker has the skill of making paper- pulp, the impression can be made into three dimensional effect through either‘blind printing’ or casting technique. From the aesthetical point of view, Bernard S. Myers (1963:189) have pointed that, paper medium is one of three important steps to determine ‘the beauty of prints’. ‘The beauty of prints’ can be shown through the quality of lines and plait on the paper medium which is the most attraction compare to any other visual of art disciplinary. This paper work is focusing on a few experiment and medium of unconventional application such as canvas, jut and plaster of paris. The writers also refer to a few printmaker that were using an alternative medium such as Raduan Man, through his work of art on the ‘Burung Besi’ (2009), woodcut print and added media on canvas, Juhari Said and Kim Ng through ‘Plaster Print’ method. The writer also would like to discuss on the advantage and disadvantage that occur in the exploration of these young local printmaker.

Ini adalah video yang saya download dari Youtube. Akela sedang menjalankan istiadat laung agung...mungkin kumpulan sekolah beliau. Istiadat yang penting diadakan di setiap perjumpaan mingguan sebagai memula dan menutup perjumpaan.  Akela mestilah dilakukan oleh pemimpin dan bukannya murid sekolah.

(Tapi, kalau tak silap...akela cuma berdiri tegak dan menghadap tiang bendera ketika menjerit PEK PEK PEK tanpa perlu lipat tangan)

Penerokaan Jenis Cetakan Mono Di Malaysia: Satu Analisis

ABSTRAK
Perbincangan berkaitan penghasilan karya seni cetak khususnya di Malaysia jarang mendapat perhatian untuk dibincangkan secara mendalam dalam konteks sejarah perkembangan seni cetak itu sendiri. Penulisan ini merupakan cetusan dan rentetan daripada pengamatan penulis terhadap karya-karya cetakan mono yang dipamerkan menerusi Pameran Seni Cetak: Ekxpression of Idea and Creativity yang diadakan di Muzium Seni Asia, Universiti Malaya pada 23 Februari hingga 22 Mac 2010. Pameran tersebut memberikan fokus kepada cetakan tradisional seperti monoprin, cetakan kayu, sutera saring dan etching. Berlaku permasalahan ‘misconcept’ yang merujuk aspek teknikal membezakan antara dua jenis cetakan mono itu, seolah-olah kurang difahami oleh sebilangan pengkarya. Objektif penulisan ini ialah untuk memperinci dan membincangkan secara ilmiah bersandarkan sejarah perkembangan penerokaan pelukis terhadap aspek teknikal. Beberapa pelukis seni cetak kontemporari tanahair telah dipilih sebagai rujukan seperti Ponirin Amin, Juhari Said dan Rosiah Md. Noor. Mereka antara pelukis seni cetak selain daripada pelukis awal dalam sejarah perkembangan seni lukis Malaysia yang turut menerokai jenis cetakan mono ini seperti Lee Jor For, Seah Kim Joo dan TK Karan. Metodologi yang digunakan adalah gabungan antara kaedah pustaka dan kerja lapangan. Data sekunder diperolehi menerusi data bertulis dan gambar daripada pelbagai sumber bercetak seperti buku, majalah, katalog pameran dan juga sumber internet. Data-data kerja lapangan diperolehi menerusi kajian kes iaitu pemerhatian dan temu bual secara ‘in-depth’. Dapatan kajian mendapati terdapat perbezaan dari segi reka bentuk, teknik dan hasil cetak atau impression antara monotaip dan monoprin. Berlaku juga penerokaan terhadap bentuk karya cetakan mono yang lazimnya bersifat dua dimensi iaitu transisi dua dimensi kepada tiga dimensi menerusi aplikasi beberapa kaedah seperti casting dan paper pulp.

Exploration of Mono Prints in Malaysia: An Analysis

ABSTRACT

Discussions related to the production of printmaking, particularly in Malaysia rarely get attention for the deeply discussed in the context of the history of printmaking itself. This Writing is a spark and a string of observations the author of the monoprint works on display through Art Exhibition Print: Ekxpression of Ideas and Creativity held at the Asian Art Museum, University of Malaya on February 23 to March 22, 2010. The exhibition focuses on traditional print monoprin, woodcut, silk screen and etching. Prevailing problems 'misconcept' refers technically to distinguish between two types of mono prints it, as if poorly understood by some artists. The objective of this paper is to analyze and discuss the historical development of scientifically based artists exploring the technical aspects. Some contemporary Malaysian printmaking has been chosen as a reference such as Juhari Said, Kamarudin Mansor and Rosiah Md. Noor. They are among the printmakers other than the early in the history of Malaysian art is also exploring this type of mono prints such as Lee Jor For, Seah Kim Joo and TK Karan. The methodology used is a combination of literature and field work methods. Secondary data were obtained through writing and artwork data from multiple sources such as printed books, periodicals, exhibition catalogs and Internet sources. The data collected through field observations of case studies and interviews are 'in-depth'. The findings revealed significant differences in terms of design, block making and the impression of the results between two types of mono prints. Apply innovation to form a mono print works are often two-dimensional nature of the transition are two dimensions to three dimensions through the application of several methods such as casting and paper pulp.
